How can you support your anxious child to learn?

Let's get to the root of it all: a calm nervous system.

Does your child suffer from anxiety? They don’t seem to be able to thrive in school or you find them saying they don’t want to go to school?

No child can successfully learn in this mindset.

No cajoling, negotiating or pacifying is going to instantly snap your child out of an anxious state. Their nervous system, though real or perceived, is telling them that they do not feel safe or secure in the environment that they find themselves in. Even if this is a setting that they have been in for a period of time.

Physical, psychological and hormonal changes take place throughout adolescence that teachers or adults working with children are often not aware of or trained on- trust me, teachers have enough going on within their subject space to know the ins and outs of a teenage life too! But these small gaps in knowledge and how to approach learning, with teenagers that are struggling through this time period, can have a humongous affect on how your child deals with their learning.

The good news is, you can take small and simple steps to help to regulate their nervous system to hopefully enable them to approach their education in a much more positive space. Guide them to feel safe, secure and confident before tackling areas where they need further support.

Where do I come in?

As a trained holistic life coach and breathwork instructor, I have expertise in working with young people to feel grounded and centred, calming the nervous system and tapping in to vagus nerve- allowing them to open up to experience more positive emotions of peace and joy.  As a mindful tutor, I begin every online session with short grounding techniques, to ease anxiety before I delve in to the juice content of English Language!

Small, online groups are perfect for anxious teens: they are able to learn from their own, physical, safe space, whilst joining a handful of other students to get the feel of a socially, engaged session, without drowning in an overwhelming classroom of sometimes 30+ bodies.  They receive the personalised learning aspect of a 1-1 session, without the somewhat perceived intimidating presence of “all eyes on them”.  I have observed students flourish in such spaces and even come to look forward to logging on to join their peers, from the comfort of their own home. It’s a comfortable ‘middle option’ for those that are struggling due to anxiety.
